J.K. Rowling‘s involvement in the upcoming Harry Potter TV show has been the topic of discussion for some time now. HBO has defended the author’s role in the series.
What did HBO say about J.K. Rowling’s involvement?
In a recent statement to Variety, Warner Bros. Discovery said that they have “been working with J.K. Rowling and in the Harry Potter business for over 20 years” and that “her contribution has been invaluable” throughout that time. The company also addressed concerns over the views of Rowling, noting that the author has “the right to express” her own views.
“We are proud to once again tell the story of Harry Potter — the heartwarming books that speak to power of friendship, resolve and acceptance,” the statement said. “J.K. Rowling has a right to express her personal views. We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement.”
Over the past few years, Rowling’s online presence has focused heavily on her campaigns against the transgender community. Many have labeled the author a “TERF” (trans-exclusionary radical feminist), and Rowling hasn’t been shy about being vocal about her beliefs on gender issues. In October, the author posted a long message to X about how — in her belief — gender identity is “defined by little more than a person’s subjective feelings, or (more accurately) their claim to feel those feelings.”
In the years since she’s become more vocal about her beliefs, many in the Harry Potter community have considered her too much of a toxic presence to continue supporting it. Various fan sites and media have shut down in the years since 4-5 years since Rowling has been so outspoken online.
Despite Rowling’s views, HBO is excited to continue work on the Harry Potter series. Last week, HBO CEO Casey Bloys said that Rowling was “very, very involved” in picking the series’ writers and director. He also said that the statements made by Rowling online “haven’t affected the casting or hiring of writers or productions staff” of the show, all of which remain mostly secret as of now.
