Taylor Sheridan’s latest neo-Western drama, Landman, has garnered much attention since its release, majorly owing to a controversial father-daughter scene in Episode 1. The series only made its small-screen debut last Sunday, premiering its first two episodes simultaneously. Viewers have lauded the show for its strong start, with Sheridan receiving praise for conceptualizing another promising western. However, many have also lambasted the series for a particular scene featuring an interesting piece of conversation in the first episode.
Here’s everything you need to know regarding the much-discussed father-daughter scene in Landman.
Why fans are slamming Taylor Sheridan for Landman’s father and daughter scene
The backlash mainly focuses on Taylor Sheridan’s decision to include a scene in Landman, where a daughter provides explicit details regarding her intimate interactions to her father.
Landman opens with crisis executive Tommy Norris, portrayed by Billy Bob Thornton, taking center stage. Amidst a fueling boom, he sets out to assist affluent oil tycoons in a bid to establish his own standing. However, Tommy also has his hands full with his immediate family, comprising of his ex-wife Angela and 17-year-old daughter Ainsley (played by Michelle Randolph).
In one interaction, Angela requests Tommy to look after Ainsley for the weekend as she intends to spend time with her new husband. He reluctantly agrees after he learns of the teenager’s attraction towards her boyfriend, Dakota Loving.
In a scene where the father-daughter duo attends Loving’s football match, Tommy inquires if Ainsley is having physical relations with her partner. She bluntly agrees, causing him to question if the two are using the necessary precautions. The outgoing daughter then proceeds to provide a detailed but insensitive answer to her father.
This has caused Landman viewers to call out Taylor Sheridan for including such a scene. The sequence in question has since initiated much controversy on the internet, with many criticizing the showrunner’s decision to use an underage character for such a derogatory dialogue. Meanwhile, others seem to see the funny side of the story, choosing to laugh the scene off.
