Andrea Mitchell announces retirement from MSNBC

Andrea Mitchell has announced her intention to leave her weekday MSNBC program and retire following the inauguration of the next president. Mitchell, who is currently 77 years old, has led “Andrea Mitchell Reports” since 2008, making her the network’s longest-serving anchor.

Although she will step down from her daily show, Mitchell is said to continue her reporting duties for NBC News. During her Tuesday broadcast, she expressed her desire to return to the field. Mitchell stated, “After 16 years of being in the anchor chair every day, I want time to do more of what I love the most — more connecting, listening, and reporting in the field, especially as whoever is elected president is going to undertake the monumental task of handling two foreign wars and the political divisions here at home.” (via AP News)

Notably, Mitchell will keep her NBC News’ chief foreign affairs correspondent and chief Washington correspondent roles.

In their statement, NBC News praised Mitchell and stated, “Andrea remains one of the country’s foremost and most trusted experts on foreign policy and domestic politics. Her deep sourcing and ability to land the biggest-name news-making interviews are unmatched. Her contributions to NBC News over the last 46 years have been invaluable to the network, and we are so pleased that she will remain an essential part of the News Group for years to come.” (via Variety)

With a career that began in 1978, she has been a pivotal figure in covering significant political events and will take on more responsibilities within NBCUniversal’s news operations.
