Bob’s Burgers actor Jay Johnston sentenced to a year in jail
Jay Johnston, best known for voicing Jimmy Pesto on Bob’s Burgers, has received a sentence of one year and one day in federal prison for his actions during the January 6 Capitol riot. U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols issued the ruling on October 28 after Johnston pleaded guilty to a felony charge of interfering with law enforcement in July. During his court appearance, Johnston expressed regret for his involvement, calling it a “humiliation” and a “horrible oversight” (via The Hill).
Judge Nichols commented that Johnston’s display of remorse was “less contrite than many” of his fellow defendants, characterizing his actions as “problematic — reprehensible, really.” Prosecutors outlined Johnston’s actions during the riot, revealing that he wielded a stolen police riot shield to create a barrier against law enforcement and took part in a forceful push that ended up injuring an officer.
They recommended an 18-month prison term, arguing that Johnston showed no genuine remorse. They highlighted a Halloween costume from 2022 in which he dressed as the so-called “QAnon Shaman,” Jacob Chansley.
Johnston’s defense argued that the prosecution exaggerated his actions because of his Hollywood background. Attorney Stanley Woodward claimed the government was pursuing a “guilty-by-association” narrative due to Johnston’s celebrity status.
Johnston’s family also spoke at the hearing, detailing the negative impact on his career and his responsibilities as a father to his autistic daughter. Ultimately, the court sentenced the actor to a year in prison, 40 hours of community service, and ordered him to pay $2,000 in restitution to the Architect of the Capitol.
