Community, one of America’s modern comedy greats, is returning for a final hurrah in the form of a feature-length movie. The fan-favorite sitcom made its small-screen debut in 2009, introducing viewers to an amusing ensemble cast. A recurring Community character who has gone on to acquire a special place in fans’ hearts is LeVar Burton’s portrayal of himself. With the show now returning as a movie, rumors of him making a comeback in Community: The Movie have started surfacing. Burton recently addressed these speculations and provided his take on the possibility of a cameo.
LeVar Burton remains unsure of returning for Community: The Movie
When LeVar Burton was asked if he would reprise his self-referential role, he denied having knowledge of his proposed return in Community: The Movie. Nevertheless, he admitted that there should be an update regarding the fate of his character.
The veteran actor commented on the said rumors during his recent interview with TVLine. Talking about his alleged appearance in Community: The Movie, LeVar Burton stated, “Ask [creator] Dan Harmon.”
After making several brief appearances on the show, the seasoned actor seemingly exited the show alongside long-time star, Donald Glover. The duo departed the series in a 2014 episode titled Geothermal Escapism by embarking on a voyage around the world on Pierce’s vessel, the Childish Tycoon.
Moreover, Community later depicted a hijacking of the ship by simply flashing a news ticker that read, “BREAKING NEWS: LeVar Burton and non-celebrity companion captured by pirates in the Gulf of Mexico,” in its Season 5 finale. The multi-faceted artist then expressed that the future of his character, in fact, needs addressing. “That was the last we heard from them. They’re on the Childish, as are the pirates,” Burton added. “We may need an update.”
At the time of writing, the much-awaited project does not have a release date. In a previous update, actor Joel McHale claimed responsibility for delaying the movie’s filming schedule. Since then, no major updates regarding its premiere schedule have come out.
