God of War TV Show Enlists Acclaimed Sci-Fi Creator as New Showrunner

God of War has a new showrunner. Per Deadline, Ronald D. Moore has been tapped as writer, executive producer, and showrunner of Prime Video’s upcoming show from Sony TV and Amazon MGM Studios.

Moore is a prominent sci-fi creator, dating back to his time as a writer on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager. After Star Trek, Moore went on to develop and co-develop several television shows, including Battlestar Galactica, Outlander, and Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams.

Moore’s most recent work is For All Mankind, the Apple TV+ sci-fi show he created with Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi. For All Mankind has run for four seasons, with a fifth on the way. A spin-off series, Star City, is in development.

Who is involved in the God of War TV show?

Moore’s hiring follows the departures of showrunner/executive producer Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus. The three had been working on the show for over two years and had completed scripts for Season 1. However, the studios decided to shift the creative direction of the series, which led to the trio’s exit.

Cory Barlog, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Hermen Hulst, and Roy Lee have remained on the series to executive produce.

God of War is a PlayStation action-adventure video game developed by Santa Monica Studios. The show will follow Kratos, the God of War, who, “after exiling himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece, hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard,” Amazon’s description reads.

“When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son Atreus to spread her ashes from the highest peak — his wife’s final wish. Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new gods and monsters for the fate of the world.”
