Why Are Kodiak’s Frozen Waffles Being Recalled? Listeria Concerns Explained

TreeHouse Foods’ 2024 recall of frozen breakfast products, including Kodiak Cakes waffles, pancakes, and Belgian waffles, has drawn attention from consumers nationwide. The recent recall covers a variety of items sold at major retailers like Walmart, Target, and Trader Joe’s. Many are eager to know which products are affected and how to handle them.

Without further ado, here are all the recall details, affected retailers, and what consumers should do.

TreeHouse Foods has recalled frozen waffle products in October 2024

In October 2024, TreeHouse Foods expanded its voluntary recall of frozen waffles due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

According to The Washington Post, this recall now includes not only over 600 varieties of frozen waffles but also more than 30 varieties of Kodiak Cakes, pancakes, and Belgian waffles. Major U.S. retailers, including Walmart, Target, and Trader Joe’s, sold the affected products. As per the report, routine testing at a manufacturing facility in Ontario identified possible Listeria contamination, leading to the expanded recall.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause serious illness, especially in vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, and fatigue, with more severe cases leading to confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. These may appear as soon as a few days after exposure or take up to 10 weeks to develop.

Meanwhile, the official statement by TreeHouse Foods reports no illnesses linked to the recall. The company urges consumers to check their freezers for recalled products and either dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a refund. This recall affects a range of breakfast products sold under private labels across the U.S. and Canada.

Consumers with questions can contact TreeHouse Foods directly. The company is actively working with retailers to remove the affected products from shelves and ensure proper disposal. The recall process continues as TreeHouse Foods addresses the potential risks associated with the contamination.
