The Michael Keaton-led Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has just become the highest-grossing movie of the year domestically at Warner Bros., replacing Dune: Part Two at the top spot.
While the horror-comedy sequel has already arrived on digital platforms a few weeks ago, the feature — which debuted in theaters in September of this year — has continued to dominate the box office, even surpassing Dune: Part Two’s record as Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing movie of 2024.
What were the totals for the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice domestic box office?
Though Dune: Part Two is still winning overseas, with a $427 million box office record against Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’s $150 million, the sequel has just accumulated $283 million domestic box office earnings. This makes it Warner Bros.’ most successful movie of 2024 and the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year overall.
Apart from its impressive box office earnings thus far, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice also received favorable reviews from critics and audiences alike. ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim called Beetlejuice Beetlejuice a “solid sequel” and “a lovingly kooky movie that does not take itself seriously.”
Additionally, the movie currently holds a 77% critic score and an 80% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Serving as a follow-up to Tim Burton’s 1988 cult classic, the renowned filmmaker returned to helm the Beetlejuice sequel. The movie also saw the return of some familiar faces, including Keaton as Betelgeuse, Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, and Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz. It also stars Jenna Ortega as Astrid, Willem Dafoe as Wolf Jackson, Monica Bellucci as Delores, Justin Theroux as Rory, and more.
Beetlejuice takes place 36 years after the events of the 1988 film, focusing on the Deetz family’s return to Winter River following the death of family patriarch Charles Deetz.
The official synopsis reads: “After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.”
