Who is Chief Mackenzie Bock? Con O’Neill’s The Batman & The Penguin Character Explained

The Penguin is back with a new episode. While the series continues to engage viewers with its powerful storytelling, another Batman easter egg is sparking discussions. It is none other than the comeback of Chief Mackenzie Bock, played by Con O’Neill, who’s known for his unique voice. So, what is so interesting about O’Neill’s character in The Batman and The Penguin?

Here is everything you need to know about the character and its connection with the universe.

Who is Con O’Neill’s Chief Mackenzie Bock in The Batman and The Penguin?

Con O’Neill’s Chief Mackenzie Bock is the chief of the Gotham City Police in Batman and The Penguin.

In Matt Reeves’ The Batman, Bock is introduced as a corrupt officer who serves as a foil character to the titular superhero. He is strictly against Batman’s ways of eliminating crime from the city. A tense moment happens between the two opposing characters at the Police Headquarters.

Batman is brought to the cops after he is held indirectly responsible for the death of District Attorney Gill. Bock is mad at Batman for his actions and asks Jim Gordon why he is protecting someone who has Colson’s blood on his hands. Despite a limited role, Bock leaves a huge impact given his opposing views of Batman.

Further, in The Penguin Episode 5, Bock returns to investigate the death of Sofia Falcone’s family. He is suspicious of Falcone, who reminds him about the corruption in the city and even takes a jibe at his corrupt behavior. Although Bock isn’t seen further his interaction with Falcone hints at something bigger in the upcoming episodes.

Who is Mackenzie Bock in the comics?

In the comics, Mackenzie Bock is a detective who later gets promoted to the position of Chief of the Gotham Police.

In the No Man’s Land arc, Bock is seen fighting for his neighborhood and even seeks Penguin’s help to get medicines for the needy. While making another deal with Penguin to save the wounded, Bock needs to fight the deadly Angel with whom he shares a bad history. Bock wins the fight and continues to watch for danger at No Man’s Land. He later becomes Chief of the Gotham City Police. While Bock is a capable cop, he is skeptical of Batman’s rebellious nature.
