More Details on Christopher Nolan’s Next Movie Emerge After Universal Deal

New details have emerged about The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan’s next movie.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Nolan and Universal Pictures were collaborating on a new project that will star Matt Damon. Production is expected to begin in early 2025, while a July 2026 release date is being planned.

Nolan previously had a long history with Warner Bros. Entertainment. Prior to his most recent film, 2023’s Oppenheimer, he released all his films through Warner Bros. apart from his first two: 1998’s Following and 2000’s Memento.

Per Variety, even though Warner Bros. wrote him a seven-figure check over COVID and distribution-related fees for 2020’s Tenet, Nolan has no plans of leaving Universal at this time.

What do we know about Christopher Nolan’s next movie?

What Nolan’s new project is remains ambiguous at this time; however, new details are starting to emerge.

“It won’t be The Prisoner, a project that has a long history at Universal and once was developed as a vehicle for the director,” Variety’s article reads. “Sources say Nolan’s latest isn’t another sci-fi epic; some speculate that it may be in the espionage genre. That’s not a surprise given that Nolan flirted with making a Bond film at one point. However, that franchise has been in limbo since Daniel Craig retired as 007 with 2021’s No Time to Die. Plus, Nolan is a final-cut director, and Bond gatekeeper Barbara Broccoli is loath to grant any filmmaker that control.”

Damon has worked with Nolan before. The Bourne Identity actor starred alongside Matthew McConaughey as Dr. Mann in 2014’s Interstellar. Damon then played a United States Army Corps of Engineers officer who was the director of the Manhattan Project named Leslie Groves in Oppenheimer.

At this time, Nolan’s next movie has been given a July 17, 2026, United States release date. It will play in IMAX.
