Founded in 1985 in Detroit by Big Meech and his younger brother, Terry Lee “Southwest Tee” Flenory, BMF quickly evolved into a significant national enterprise. At its peak, the organization boasted over 500 members. It reportedly generated more than $270 million in revenue from 1989 to 2005.
Big Meech was instrumental in developing a cocaine distribution network that connected Los Angeles drug sources with Mexican cartels. Additionally, he launched BMF Entertainment, a hip-hop music label that served as a front for the brothers’ illicit activities (via Newsweek).
When and why did Big Meech go to prison?
Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory’s legal issues began in 2005 when he was arrested during a large-scale Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) operation that targeted the Black Mafia Family (BMF). This raid led to the arrest of 30 individuals affiliated with the organization and the confiscation of around $2 million in cash, weapons, and cocaine.
In 2007, both Big Meech and his brother Terry Lee were indicted on multiple charges related to drug trafficking and money laundering. The following year, they both pleaded guilty for operating a continuing criminal enterprise. Flenory was sentenced to 30 years in prison. However, in 2024, a judge reportedly reduced his sentence by nearly three years.
Big Meech has recently been released from prison. He is now set to complete the remainder of his sentence at a halfway house, as reported by TMZ. The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that Flenory was transferred to community confinement under the supervision. According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Big Meech is now expected to be released on January 27, 2026.
