Netflix’s Unstable Canceled After Season 2, Producers Already Shopping the Series

Netflix has decided not to renew Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe’s workplace comedy series Unstable for Season 3. The show originally premiered in March 2023 and returned with a sophomore season on August 1, 2024. The producers behind the series are already trying to find a new home for it.

Rob Lowe’s son, John Owen Lowe, reacts to Unstable cancellation

The news of the cancellation broke on Friday, October 11. A couple of days later, John Owen Lowe, who co-created Unstable with his father and Victor Fresco and stars as Jackson Dragon, took to Instagram to thank the cast, crew, and Netflix.

“Wanted to take a second to thank everyone for the incredible experience making Unstable,” John Owen shared. “To the cast, I love you. To the crew, I love you. To the fans, I love and appreciate you. So proud of us. This show rocks. Rocked? Rocks,” he added.

The Holiday in the Wild actor continued, “And to Netflix: thank you. I no longer have to work with my old man. The greatest gift of all. Love you too.”

The cancellation was reportedly due to the second season’s poor performance with the audience. Netflix decides on a show’s renewal prospects by weighing its viewership number compared to its cost, and Unstable Season 2 reportedly didn’t make it to the Netflix Top 10 list even in the first week after its release.

Unstable producers are already shopping the series

Unstable producers are already shopping the series, hoping to find a new network for the show just like One Day at a Time did for its fourth season, Deadline reported. The first three seasons of the modern remake of the CBS sitcom (1975-1984) debuted on Netflix between 2017 and 2019 before the show’s cancellation. The fourth season eventually came out on Pop TV in 2020.

Notably, Netflix canceled That ’90s Show, also after the second season, earlier this month. According to series star Kurtwood Smith, they are looking for a new home network for it as well.
