Fans of We Live in Time are wondering whether Almut dies and why Tobias gets a dog for Ella. Directed by John Crowley, the film depicts Almut and Tobias’ budding relationship, which faces numerous challenges and complications. This movie serves as the second collaboration between Crowley and lead actor Andrew Garfield, who previously worked together on the latter’s debut film, Boy A.
So, here’s We Live in Time‘s ending explained.
Does Almut die at the end of We Live in Time?
Almut is implied to have died by the end of We Live in Time. The film does not depict her death. This implication is quite clear in the final scene, where Tobias instead of Almut teaches their daughter Ella how to break an egg like Almut had taught him. Despite her death, Almut’s presence is heavily felt in the ending, due to Tobias and Ella bonding over an activity greatly connected to her.
In the film, Almut gets diagnosed with Ovarian cancer, prior to giving birth to her and Tobias’ daughter Ella. Three years late, the cancer advances to stage 3, after Almut becomes the head chef of her own restaurant. Realizing her life has been cut short, Almut heavily focuses on the Bocuse d’Or, one of the world’s most prestigious cooking competitions. This initially causes friction with Tobias, as the training for the competition clashes with her cancer treatments and their planned wedding.
However, they eventually come to an understanding after Almut expresses her wishes for their daughter to remember her as an excellent chef rather than a sickly and dying woman. In her final scene, Almut is shown leaving the Bocuse d’Or competition after successfully finishing it, spending some quality time with Tobias and Ella at a nearby ice skating rink.
Why did Tobias get a dog for Ella?
Tobias got a dog for Ella to help her cope with her mother’s death. Tobias and Almut had actually planned to get her one, shortly after Almut’s cancer diagnosis and prior to Ella’s birth.
Besides Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, We Live in Time stars Grace Delaney, Lee Braithwaite, Aoife Hinds, Adam James, Douglas Hodge, Amy Morgan, and Niamh Cusack, among many others.
