Rings of Power Season 2 Viewership Revealed, Season 3 Update Given

Amazon MGM Studios head Jennifer Salke revealed several updates for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, including Season 2’s viewership numbers and Season 3’s status.

In an interview with Variety, Salke discussed the reaction to Season 2, mentioning how many people have watched the new episodes since the show’s return in August 2024.

“That being said, over 70 million people at this point have engaged since Season 2 launched,” Salke said about the viewership. “And if you look at the long-term trajectory, which is how this company looks at an asset like that, this is a long-term investment in that franchise . . . There’s well over 100 million viewers watching and engaging with the show. So I feel really good. I think we all do.”

Season 1’s viewership reached about 150 million people, so Salke is hopeful Season 2 will eventually approach that figure.

Will There Be a Rings of Power Season 3?

Amazon originally had a 50-hour plan for The Rings of Power and according to Salke, that proposal hasn’t changed, meaning a Season 3 renewal is likely on the way.

“I don’t think so,” Salke said when asked about changes to the 50-hour project. “[That] commitment is never the thing that’s driving what we’re doing. We’ll continue to make the show as long as we see global customers loving it and watching it to the point where — it is a business. Obviously, we need a large amount of people showing up. And there are a large amount of people, so there’s no debate about whether or not the show will continue.”

Last week, reports surfaced that the Prime Video series was “on the verge” of being renewed for a third season, and an official renewal was expected sometime late this month. Showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay have reportedly begun work on the third season even without a renewal.

The Rings of Power Season 2 concluded on October 3. All episodes are now available to stream on Prime Video.
