Netflix’s The Platform 2 Rakes in Large Viewership Despite Negative Reviews

Upon its release in 2020 on Netflix, The Platform proved to be a massive success, bringing in unexpectedly huge viewership numbers. The Spanish horror flick ended up becoming one of the major summer hits for the renowned streaming platform. While the movie received backlash from critics for its incoherent narrative, its overwhelming digital performance convinced Netflix to commence development on its follow-up, The Platform 2.

Four years after its predecessor debuted on Netflix, The Platform 2 has now been released and is garnering worse reviews than the original film. Nevertheless, the sup-par critical response hasn’t stopped the Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia directorial venture from climbing the Netflix’s viewership charts.

The Platform 2 tops Netflix viewership charts despite critical backlash

While The Platform 2 has raked in negative reviews from all sides, it still managed to become the most-watched movie on Netflix last week.

The horror sequel reportedly brought in 32.6 million hours in views last weekend, according to streaming numbers released by Netflix. The report curated by the entertainment giant contained viewership numbers from September 30 to October 6, as per ComicBook.com. Despite only coming out on October 4, The Platform 2 still dominated every other piece of content on Netflix over the weekend. Newly released action-comedy Trouble finished in the second place, having been viewed for over 16 million hours last week.

While The Platform 2 performed brilliantly in terms of viewership, it is struggling to gain positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. At the time of writing, the sequel has an underwhelming critic score of 42% on Rotten Tomatoes. From the looks of it, the film has fared much worse among the general public and currently sports a measly 26% audience score on the website.

Due to the massive success of the franchise, a third entry seems likely to be on the cards. Moreover, the director of The Platform 2 has provided a positive update with regards to expanding the film series. Nonetheless, The Platform 3 has yet to receive an official confirmation and release date from its creators.
