Has Prime Video Canceled The Rings of Power or Renewed It for Season 3?

The fate of Middle-earth hangs in the balance as Season 3 of The Rings of Power looms. With echoes of past battles still ringing in the air, both heroes and villains find themselves drawn into a web of intrigue and danger. Will the forces of good prevail, or will darkness consume the land? As the stakes rise higher than ever, viewers are left wondering: Is The Rings of Power canceled or renewed?

Here, we explore the future possibilities for The Rings of Power.

Is The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power canceled or renewed for Season 3?

Amazon acquired the television rights to The Lord of the Rings from the Tolkien Estate in November 2017, committing to a five-season series with a minimum budget of $1 billion, making it the most expensive television series ever produced.

The first season, which premiered in 2022, became Prime Video’s most-watched original series. Given its success, The Rings of Power was renewed for a second season, which premiered in August 2024. However, viewership for the second season saw a decline compared to its predecessor. During an interview with Variety, Ismael Cruz Córdova hinted at the possibility of a third season, stating that internal discussions about the show’s continuation have taken place.

“As far as I know, they kind of confirmed that we’re going for a third [season]. I haven’t seen any scripts, though. I would love to. But I’m pretty sure we’re going for a third,” he added.

Córdova’s comments align with reports that The Rings of Power Season 3 has been in early development for several months. However, Amazon has not yet officially greenlit production for the new season. Despite a drop in viewership, Amazon is reportedly satisfied with the international performance of Season 2. Sources suggest that the company still intends to follow the original five-season plan, as outlined by showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.

While viewership for The Rings of Power declined from Season 1 to Season 2, the series remains a strong performer for Prime Video. All indications suggest that Amazon will proceed with Seasons 3, 4, and 5 as planned (via The Hollywood Reporter).

While the show has seen a decline in viewership, the production teams remain committed to delivering epic storytelling for their dedicated fanbase.
