What Happened to Raphael Varane? Retirement & Injury Updates

Perennial winner Raphael Varane has experienced a playing career that most up-and-coming footballers dream of having. Apart from being a World Cup winner with France, the center-back also has four Champions League titles. However, recent fitness issues seemed to have derailed the ex-Real Madrid defender’s form, forcing him to embrace the twilight phase of his career prematurely. But what injury did Varane sustain in his early days at Como 1907?

Here are all the available details regarding Varane’s latest ailment and his retirement.

How did Raphael Varane get injured while playing football?

Raphael Varane suffered from a crucial knee injury in his maiden appearance for Como against Sampdoria. As such, the defender had to be withdrawn from his side’s Coppa Italia fixture after 23 minutes.

The 31-year-old France international joined the newly-promoted Serie A side earlier this year following the conclusion of his contract with Manchester United. However, two months into his two-year contract with Cesc Fabregas’ team, Varane contracted a knee injury that sidelined him for months. Consequently, Como decided against including him in their Serie A squad for the season, as per Irish Mirror.

Is Raphael Varane retiring from football?

Having struggled with a flurry of injuries recently, the French defender officially announced his retirement through an Instagram post.

Varane penned an emotional post on his social media profile to relay the news of his retirement to fans. “I have fallen and risen a thousand times, and this time, it’s the moment to stop and hang my boots up,” the center-back wrote. The news comes one year after the former United man called it quits on his international career.

In his parting note, Varane stated that he intends to continue working with Como. However, it is currently unknown what role the three-time La Liga winner will undertake at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.
