Chappell Roan faces online backlash over her comment

Chappell Roan recently made some comments regarding the election that caused significant backlash online. In a TikTok video on September 24, she sought to clarify her position. The backlash stemmed from an interview Roan gave to The Guardian on September 20, where she expressed having “so many issues with our government in every way.” She mentioned feeling no pressure to endorse a candidate, as she sees problems on both sides.

Roan emphasized the need for voters to use their critical thinking skills and focus on local issues. She said, “Vote small, vote for what’s going on in your city.” Roan further highlighted “trans rights” as the top issue she wants voters to prioritize, insisting, “They cannot have cis people making decisions for trans people, period.”

Following her comments, various interpretations emerged online. Critics noted her status as an advocate for the queer community, which has felt targeted by policies under the Trump administration. Many interpreted her comments as an attempt to place both candidates on equal footing when one side has actively harmed the community she represents.

In response to the uproar, Roan reiterated in her TikTok that many were not reading her full quote, which she shared to provide context. She stressed the importance of questioning authority and world leaders, stating, “I think it’s important for me to question authority and question world leaders and question myself, question my algorithm. Question if some person that tweeted something about someone else is even true.”
