Fans are eagerly awaiting the long-gestating sequel 28 Years Later and have been speculating on what the new movie will look like in relation to the first two films in the series. Now, it’s been revealed that director Danny Boyle and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, who won Academy Awards in their respective categories for Slumdog Millionaire, have shot the film on iPhone 15 Pro Max, albeit with a few attachments.

28 Years Later, the much-anticipated sequel to 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007), was filmed using iPhone 15 Pro Max, according to a report by WIRED. This fits the collaborative history of Doyle and Mantle, who used a Canon XL-1 to shoot 28 Days Later, which became one of the first movies to use the camera.
Filming for 28 Years Later reportedly began in May 2024 and concluded in late July, but according to WIRED, the fact that the movie was shot on smartphones was kept a secret. Moreover, the outlet reported that the staff were asked to enter into NDAs regarding the matter.
However, a photo taken on the set, presumably by paparazzi, came out. Following a close inspection of the camera apparatus, it was deduced that Boyle and Mantle had placed a smartphone inside a protective cage. WIRED reports that multiple individuals associated with the movie had confirmed that 28 Years Later was filmed with an iPhone 15 Pro Max. However, as mentioned above, the filmmakers didn’t just use the phones but added several attachments to them.
Films made with smartphones are generally low-budgeted projects. In comparison, 28 Years Later has a budget of $75 million. The film premieres in US theaters on June 20, 2025, and the film’s cast includes Cillian Murphy as Jim, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
