Although Transformers One isn’t out until this weekend, longtime Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura imagines that a sequel is coming.
Speaking to Collider about the state of the Transformers film franchise as a whole, di Bonaventura said that “subject to success,” he thinks a Transformers One sequel is coming, and will exist “completely separately” to the live-action world of Transformers films.
“Well, we’re going, again, subject to success, we’re going to do a sequel to this, and there will be an animated version, and it will exist completely separately to whatever we do live-action,” said di Bonaventura.
Future of Transformers franchise will focus on Transformers’ POV
Elsewhere in the interview, di Bonaventura also dove into what fans can expect from the future of the live-action universe of Transformers films. He confirmed once again that the next film will be a crossover with the G.I. Joe franchise, but also said a goal of the future films will be to tell stories from the point of view of the robots.
“The next live-action movie will be a crossover. Where it will be particularly affected is the fact that we now know what these robots are capable of emotionally in a way,” di Bonaventura said. “So we’re going to have to figure out how to create that room, that we can afford that, and create a story that you can take more advantage of that. So one of the things that I’m particularly interested in doing, and we’re still in the development phase, so nothing is by any means written in stone, but I think we need to do more now from the robot point of view in the live-action because that’s the only way you’re really going to get inside them.”
Transformers One is the franchise’s first animated theatrical film since The Transformers: The Movie. After a five-year hiatus, Transformers live-action films returned in 2023 with Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
Transformers One opens in theaters on September 20, 2024.
