Indigenous Comics Come Together in Exclusive Rez Comedy Trailer

ComingSoon is debuting an exclusive Rez Comedy trailer, previewing the first stand-up comedy feature film featuring all Indigenous Canadian comics.

What happens in the Rez Comedy trailer?

The Rez Comedy trailer details the upcoming film, which sees eight Indigenous comics all coming together from around Canada to put on a special set connected by the Squamish nation. The set was filmed in June 2024 in front of a live crowd, and will release theatrically beginning on October 4, 2024, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Rez Comedy is directed by Quentin Lee and Keith Nahanee, and features appearances by Wayne Alexis, Chuck Cease, Denise B. McLeod, Janelle Niles, Drea Omer, Helena Paul, Brenda Prince, and Kevin Shawanda.

The concept of Rez Comedy originally came together as a 13-part television series for APTN (Aboriginal Peoples Television Network) and CMF (Canada Media Fund). However, the series was not greenlit, and after unsuccessful attempts to crowdfund for a different option, the decision was made to finance the production as a film.

In a statement on the film, host and co-director Keith Nahanee said that he hopes to bring laughter to everyone. “As Indigenous people have large families, we go through a lot of deaths,” said Nahanee. “It’s heavy on the heart. You just want to bring laughter so we can put that grief down for a bit…and be able to laugh.”
