3 Body Problem star Rosalind Chao has opened up about The Joy Luck Club sequel, which has been in development since 2022. In the 1993 movie, Chao portrayed the role of Rose Hsu Jordan.

During a recent interview, Chao finally shared a brand new update regarding the current status of The Joy Luck Club sequel, confirming that the project is still moving forward. She revealed that she will be meeting with the rest of main cast soon to talk about the project.

“The girls are all having a quick zoom Tuesday night to discuss,” Chao said (via Deadline). “There’s a script. I cried when I read the script.

The Joy Luck Club sequel is being developed by Oscar-winning writer Ron Bass and author Amy Tan, who wrote the bestselling novel that the first film was based on. It will be produced by Ashok Amritraj and Jeff Kleeman. The original movie was directed by Wayne Wang. The multigenerational drama centered around the lives of four Chinese women and their relationship with their Chinese-American daughters. Besides Chao, It also starred Tsai Chin, Kieu Chinh, Lisa Lu, and France Nuyen along with Lauren Tom, Tamlyn Tomita, and Ming-Na Wen.

“In the upcoming film, the mothers become grandmothers and the daughters become mothers in their own right, introducing a new generation exploring their own relationships with culture, heritage, love, womanhood, and identity,” reads the sequel’s initial synopsis.
