Netflix’s Rebel Ridge is a tale of police violence, administrative corruption, small-town prejudice, and a man left with no choice but to stand up against all these things. At a crucial juncture in the movie, Terry Richmond (Aaron Pierre), the protagonist, gets help from Deputy Jessica Sims (Zsané Jhé) and the viewers want to know the reasons behind it.
Here is everything you need to know about why Sims and other officers help Terry.
Why did Deputy Sims and other police officers help Terry and Summer at the end of Rebel Ridge?
The plot revolves around Terry Richmond, a former Marine Corps martial arts instructor. He arrives in the fictional town of Shelby Springs to post bail for his cousin, Mike. However, Terry becomes reluctantly entangled in a bitter feud with the corrupt police department there, headed by Chief Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson), after the officers confiscate the money brought for the bail.
There are some similarities between Rebel Ridge and movies like First Blood (1982). The newer movie reaches an ending that may surprise many viewers even though it perfectly fits the inherent morality of the main character. Following Mike’s death in prison, Terry becomes resolved to hold Burnne and his department accountable. With the help of court assistant Summer McBride (AnnaSophia Robb), Terry tries to find a way to expose the officers.
However, Summer is captured and drugged. Terry has previously learned that Summer had an informant within Burnne’s department and erroneously concludes that it’s Sims. The mistake results in the destruction of the evidence that Terry and Summer have gathered. They almost lose their lives until the real informant Officer Evan Marston (David Denman) reveals himself.
After Brunne shoots Marston in the leg, a skirmish ensues. Terry manages to escape with his allies. And when it seems they will be caught, Sims intervenes and hits Brunne’s vehicle with her own.
Sims’ change of heart isn’t out of nowhere. It is indicated that she and other officers planned to intercept Brunne. The radio chatter also reveals that they have notified the state police. Perhaps, after discovering that Brunne was ready to sacrifice one of their own (Marston) to cover his tracks, Sims and the other officers realize they must do the right thing. As Sims prepares to arrest her boss, the rest of the officers provide an escort to Terry and the others to the hospital.
