What Happened to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Punter? Cameron Johnston Injury Explained

The Pittsburgh Steelers opened their 2024 NFL season on a bright note following their 18-10 victory against the Atlanta Falcons. Despite the match-up proving to be a rather lackluster affair, Mike Tomlin’s men ultimately managed to secure a hard-earned win. Nevertheless, the Steelers’ victory was soured after their starting punter, Cameron Johnston, had to abandon the game due to an injury. But what happened to the NFL veteran?

How did Cameron Johnston get injured while playing football?

The Steelers’ punter sustained an injury after he landed awkwardly on his kicking leg. As such, Johnston had to recede the game without getting the chance to complete it.

The unfortunate incident occurred in the fourth quarter of the game, according to CBS Sports. Johnston’s disrupted kick forced Chris Boswell to attempt the first punt of his career, which ultimately scoured over 43 yards. Following his injury, the seasoned punter was assessed by the Steelers’ medical staff, but to no avail.

The 32-year-old athlete only joined forces with the Pittsburgh side this summer, arriving at the Acrisure Stadium from the Texans. Johnston was brought in to compete with Pressley Harvin III but ended up taking his place in the starting lineup in the offseason. Nevertheless, the Steelers will now have to look for another first-team punter following Cameron Johnston’s recent injury.

When will Cameron Johnston return to play with the Pittsburgh Steelers?

The extent of the Australian-born footballer’s ailment remains unknown at the time of this writing. Consequently, it is difficult to predict when Johnston can return to full fitness.

However, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin did give some updates regarding his player’s condition in a post-match conference. “From a health standpoint, Cam Johnston appears to have a serious injury,” he said. “I’ll have an update for you the next time we come together.”

With Tomlin confirming the serious nature of Johnston’s injury, it is expected that the Steelers’ newly recruited punter will be sidelined for some time.
