Trey Parker and Matt Stone have given an update about South Park Season 27.
Created by Parker and Stone, South Park originally debuted in August 1997. There have since been 328 episodes of the beloved animated series, with Season 26 having concluded in March 2023.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Parker and Stone confirmed that South Park Season 27 won’t arrive until 2025.
What else did Trey Parker and Matt Stone say about South Park Season 27?
Parker said that part of the reason for the delay is because they are “waiting for Paramount to figure all their shit out,” though he didn’t specifically specify what he meant by that.
Per Variety, they are presumably referencing recent headlines about Paramount Global’s proposed sale to Skydance, as the two companies reached an agreement in July 2024 that is reportedly worth around $8 billion.
Stone and Parker also noted that they’re waiting for the United States presidential election to be over before continuing with South Park.
“We’ve tried to do South Park through four or five presidential elections, and it is such a hard thing to—it’s such a mind scramble, and it seems like it takes outsized importance,” Stone said. “Obviously, it’s f***ing important, but it kind of takes over everything and we just have less fun.
Parker added, “I don’t know what more we could possibly say about Trump.”
Since South Park Season 26 concluded, there have been three specials that have aired: 2023’s South Park: Joining the Panderverse, 2023’s South Park (Not Suitable for Children), and 2024’s South Park: The End of Obesity.
“It’s just way more fun to be like, Oh, Cartman’s going to dress up like a robot,” Stone commented.
All 26 seasons of South Park are currently streaming on Max. A premiere date for South Park Season 27 has not yet been announced.
