What is A Complete Unknown about?
“Set in the influential New York music scene of the early 60s, A Complete Unknown follows 19-year-old Minnesota musician Bob Dylan’s (Timothée Chalamet) meteoric rise as a folk singer to concert halls and the top of the charts – his songs and mystique becoming a worldwide sensation – culminating in his groundbreaking electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965,” the official synopsis reads.
Along with Chalamet, the movie stars Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, Dan Fogler as Albert Grossman, Norbert Leo Butz as Alan Lomax, Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie, P. J. Byrne as Harold Leventhal, and more.
Based on the 2015 novel Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald, the script was co-written by Mangold and Jay Cocks. Fred Berger, Alex Heineman, Peter Jaysen, Bob Bookman, Alan Gasmer, Jeff Rosen, Chalamet, and Mangold produce the movie, while Michael Bederman, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, and Andrew Rona serve as executive producers.
Mangold notably made a biopic about Johnny Cash in 2005, titled Walk the Line, which stars Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, and more. His filmography also includes 1999’s Girl, Interrupted, 2007’s 3:10 to Yuma, 2010’s Knight and Day, 2013’s The Wolverine, 2017’s Logan, 2019’s Ford v Ferrari, and 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, while he’s now working on a Swamp Thing movie set in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU.
A Complete Unknown will be released in United States theaters on December 25, 2024, from Searchlight Pictures.
