During D23, Disney released a new Moana 2 trailer for the highly anticipated sequel to 2016’s hit animated film. It shows new footage of Auli’i Cravalho‘s Moana and Dwayne Johnson’s Maui. Directed by David G. Derrick Jr., it is set to release in theaters on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
“Moana 2 reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”

Who is in Moana 2?
The Moana 2 cast also features returning stars Rachel House (Moana’s Grandma, Tala), Temuera Morrison (Moana’s father, Chief Tui) and Nicole Scherzinger (Moana’s mother, Sina). The film also features the voices of Hualālai Chung, David Fane and Rose Matafeo as Moana’s new crew members Moni, Kele and Loto, respectively. Awhimai Fraser voices mysterious new character Matangi; Gerald Ramsey plays Moana’s ancestor, Tautai Vasa; and Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda lends her voice to Moana’s adoring and adorable little sister, Simea.
The original film was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker. It was not only a commercial success with a gross of over $600 million, but it also earned positive reviews from critics and earned two Oscar nominations, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
