Box Office Results: Longlegs Scares Up Big Numbers, Despicable Me 4 Reigns

Despicable Me 4 remained on top at the box office this weekend with $44.6 million in its sophomore frame, raising its domestic cume to $211.1M and its global tally to $438M. Despicable Me/Minions became the first animated franchise to hit $5 billion worldwide, easily surpassing the $4B mark earned by Shrek.

Still, all eyes were on NEON’s Longlegs this weekend. The horror feature starring Nicolas Cage finished second after earning a stellar $22.6M from 2,510 theaters. Per Neon’s press note: “Not since The Blair Witch Project launched 25 years ago on the same weekend in July has there been an independent genre film that out-projected, out-performed, and over-indexed so wildly that it seemed to the industry it ‘came out of nowhere.’” Blair Witch went on to gross a massive $140.5M after earning $29.5M in its first week of wide release. Also of note, this is Cage’s first $20M+ opening since 2011’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

Elsewhere, Apple Original’s Fly Me to the Moon, starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, failed to make much noise with just $10M in its debut. That number wouldn’t be terrible except that the rom-com cost $100M to produce. Hopefully, the A- CinemaScore propels this one to more significant numbers.

Per Deadline, Inside Out 2 earned another $20.7M, bringing its domestic total to $572.5M. Worldwide, Pixar’s hit has collected $1.35B and is now the studio’s highest-grossing film. A Quiet Place 2 continues to perform well, crossing $200M globally in its third weekend.

This week, audiences will see Twisters, the belated sequel to the 1996 blockbuster. Instead of the late great Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, Universal tapped rising stars Glenn Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones to chase the CGI storms. The film has already earned $11.5M in 38 markets and is expected to blow the lid off the box office with anywhere from $40M to $80M.
