Star Wars: The Acolyte Episode 3 poses more questions than it answers. Set 16 years before the previous two episodes, it depicts Mae’s and Osha’s (Amandla Stenberg) life as part of a coven of witches on Planet Brendok before they lost everything in a massive fire. The coven, led by Mother Aniseya, is exclusively made up of Force-sensitive females of various species. This has made fans wonder whether these witches are the Dark Side or Light Side users of the Force.
Here is everything we have on the allegiance of the witches in Star Wars: The Acolyte.
Do the witches in The Acolyte use the Dark-Side or Light-Side of the Force?
While the episode doesn’t specify whether witches on Brendok use the Light Side of the Force or the Dark Side, they and the Jedi seem to share a mutual wariness and dislike of each other. This indicates that they might lean toward the Dark Side of the Force.
Aniseya’s coven refers to the Force as the Thread and doesn’t have a rigid view of its two opposite aspects like the Jedi and the Sith. So, it’s probably safe to speculate that they are similar to some of the other covens that have been introduced into Star Wars canon and regularly use elements of what the Jedi refers to as the Dark Side.

Before Osha and Mae take the Jedi test, they briefly argue whether the Jedi are good or bad. Mother Aniseya explains to Osha that this isn’t about good or bad, but “about power and who is allowed to use it.”
Further, a conversation between Mother Aniseya and Mother Koril in episode 3 effectively confirms that the Jedi will not like the method that Aniseya used to “create” the twins, once more implying that the witches sometimes flirt with the Dark Side.
