While George Miller reintroduced audiences to Max Rockatansky in Mad Max: Fury Road, the movie famously debuted the character of Imperator Furiosa, Immortan Joe’s top lieutenant, who leads a daring mission to free “The Five Wives.” Charlize Theron’s Furiosa eventually claims the Citadel and gives Max a final glance before Fury Road ends. However, what happens to Furiosa after Fury Road? It’s something Miller has contemplated, which may involve a villainous turn.
“I’ve often speculated when we see Furiosa go up to the Citadel on that platform at the very end [of Fury Road] and nod goodbye to Max who wanders to the Wasteland,” Miller told GamesRadar+. “I often think: ‘What does she do, sitting up at the top of the dominant hierarchy? Does she fall into the trap that most revolutionaries do? You know, yesterday’s hero becomes tomorrow’s tyrant, which is classic in storytelling.'”
While Furiosa’s future is unknown, her past is now the subject of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The film begins when Furiosa is a child and chronicles her rise before Fury Road. Will Miller explore Furiosa’s younger years before her abduction?
“I’m not interested in Furiosa from when she’s playing in the Green Place from the age zero to 10 [laughs],” Miller added. “Collecting peaches, and swimming, and learning to climb, and figuring out what a motorbike is even though there’s no gasoline, and so on.”
What to Expect in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga?
Set 15 to 20 years before Fury Road, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Imperator Furiosa.
“As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus,” the official synopsis reads. “Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.”
Besides Taylor-Joy, Furiosa also stars Chris Hemsworth as Dementus, Tom Burke as Praetorian Jack, Lachy Hulme as Immortan Joe, and Alyla Browne as a young Furiosa.
Miller directs Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga from a script he co-wrote with Nico Lathouris. The prequel premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival to predominantly positive reviews. Furiosa arrives in theaters on May 24, 2024.
