Prime Video has announced that Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 is on the way but without its stars.
According to Variety, both Donald Glover and Maya Erskine won’t return for the second season. The duo starred in the first season, which was a critical and commercial hit for the streamer. Glover is said to still be an executive producer on the series alongside showrunner Francesca Sloane, who will return.
“We are excited to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, is in the works for our global Prime Video customers,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios. “The success of the first season, with its incredibly modern, sexy reinvention of the original film, is a testament to the brilliant creators Donald Glover and Francesa Sloane. We are proud to bring you another season filled with unforgettable journeys and new adventures.”
What is Mr. & Mrs. Smith about?
“Two lonely strangers land a job working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travels and a dream brownstone in Manhattan,” reads the series‘ synopsis. “The catch: new identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. & Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier, espionage or marriage?”
The first season was led by Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, with appearances from Alexander Skarsgård, Eiza González, Sarah Paulson, Sharon Horgan, Ron Perlman, Billy Campbell, Úrsula Corberó, Paul Dano, Michaela Coel, John Turturro, Parker Posey, and Wagner Moura as guest stars.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith was created and executive produced by Glover (Swarm, Atlanta) and Francesca Sloane (Atlanta, Fargo). New Regency’s Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer also executive produce. It hails from Amazon Studios.
