Jason Statham has been tapped to star in Mutiny, a new action thriller movie directed by Jean-François Richet.
Announced in a press release, Lionsgate has acquired the North American distribution rights to Mutiny. The film, which is headed to the Cannes Film Market later this month for an international distributor, will star Staham as a character named Cole Reed.
What is Munity about?
“In Mutiny, after his billionaire industrialist boss is murdered in front of him, Cole Reed is set up to take the fall for the crime— leaving him on the run as he works to uncover an international conspiracy,” the synopsis for the movie reads.
Mutiny is written by Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis. Statham produces the movie via his Punch Palace Productions company alongside Marc Butan of MadRiver Pictures. Production on Mutiny is expected to begin in September.
“Jason Statham is one of the most kinetic action stars in the world and we look forward to teaming him up with Jean-François and the MadRiver team who we previously worked with on Plane,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s Lauren Bixby. “We can’t wait to see that creative energy once again as we bring Mutiny to life.”
Richet is best known for helming the 2023 action movie Plane, which starred Gerard Butler, Mike Colter, and Tony Goldwyn. He also directed 2005’s Assault on Precinct 13, 2008’s Mesrine: Killer Instinct, 2008’s Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1, 2016’s Blood Father, and 2018’s The Emperor of Paris.
Statham is known for starring in a large handful of action franchises, including The Transporter, Crank, The Expendables, The Fast and the Furious, The Mechanic, and The Meg. He’s also starred in action movies such as 2003’s The Italian Job, 2008’s Death Race, 2012’s Safe, 2021’s Wrath of Man, and, most recently, 2024’s The Beekeeper.
