According to Deadline, in May 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that a new Lord Of The Rings film was in early development from director Andy Serkis, who portrays Gollum / Smeagol in the franchise. Titled Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum (working title), the film will “explore storylines yet to be told,” according to David Zaslav, Warner Bros Discovery CEO.
Peter Jackson is returning to produce the project alongside Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. The latter two are also involved in developing the script with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou from the original works by J.R.R. Tolkien.
According to Variety, Serkis said in a statement, “Yesssss, Precious. The time has come once more to venture into the unknown with my dear friends, the extraordinary and incomparable guardians of Middle-earth, Peter, Fran and Philippa … it’s just all too delicious …”
