Young Sheldon Star Shocked by ‘Stupid Business Move’ to Cancel Hit Series

Young Sheldon stars are speaking out about CBS’ decision to cancel the hit sitcom. With the series finale set to air on May 16, Connie “MeeMaw” Tucker actress Annie Potts has criticized the network’s decision to end The Big Bang Theory spin-off despite its strong ratings.

Following the cast members’ emotional tribute to the show earlier this month, Potts and Sheldon Cooper actor Iain Armitage spoke with Variety about the cancellation. Potts, who is no stranger to series finales, says that Young Sheldon “was especially hard” as she was “completely unprepared.”

“I was shocked. I mean, the No. 1 show on network TV, No. 1 on Netflix. We’re, I think, all that people watch on TikTok besides a couple of recipes for pasta. It just seemed like such a stupid business move,” said Potts. “Forgive me, but I don’t know. If a show is starting to drag or lag or have a lack of stories or whatever, then you kind of see it coming. We were totally ambushed by this. I was, anyway.”

Armitage then backed Potts’ comments, saying, “I totally get what Annie means. It’s also just hard in a really weird way that I can only really see if I step back and try and take a global view, which is hard. I mean, I’m not going to get to see Annie Potts every day. This is a real loss for me. More than anyone. I definitely think we could have done a lot more.”

What is next for the Young Sheldon series?

Though the series will officially end with the seventh season, a new spin-off centered on Georgie (Montana Jordan) and Mandy (Emily Osment) has been confirmed to have progressed beyond the development stage. The planned series will center on the duo as they navigate their married life in Texas.

Young Sheldon Season 7 finale airs on CBS on May 16 at 8 p.m. ET.
