Fallout TV Show: Do I Need To Play the Games To Understand the Series?

Fans excited about the Fallout TV show want to know if they need to play all the games before watching the series to understand it. So, here’s all the Fallout-related information required before binging the new Amazon Prime Video series.

Do I need to play the Fallout games to watch the Fallout TV show?

No, you don’t need to play the Fallout games to watch the Amazon Prime Video series.

Watching Fallout, viewers will get to immerse themselves into an alternate Earth where an apocalyptic nuclear war changed the planet. In this version of Earth, humanity survives by living in fallout bunkers known as Vaults. Knowing this premise, anyone can start watching the show without diving deep into the games’ mythology.

Even the Fallout game director Todd Howard said in an interview with Den of Geek that it isn’t important to play the games before watching the show. He said:

“If you’re a fan of the series already, you can jump in and experience the next chapter in Fallout. If you’re not a fan and a bit intimidated by jumping in a game like that, you can experience everything that’s great about this world by clicking your button and enjoying it.”

As per the timeline of the games, the series is set after all the games, taking place in the year 2296. Fans of the games will be able to find easter eggs and connections to multiple games of the past. But new viewers will be able to enjoy this world without knowing about the games.

How many Fallout games are there?

There are currently nine Fallout games in total.

Eight of the nine current Fallout games can be played on consoles while one is a mobile-based management simulator called Fallout Shelter.

The following six games of the series are full role-playing titles:

  • Fallout
  • Fallout 2
  • Fallout 3
  • Fallout: New Vegas
  • Fallout 4
  • Fallout 76

But there are two spinoffs called Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, an RPG dungeon-crawler spin-off, and Fallout Tactics, a squad-based tactical RPG combat spin-off.
