The Dune 2 box office numbers continue to get bigger weekend after weekend. But does Part Two have long legs that could push it past the esteemed billion-dollar benchmark? Here are all the possibilities for it.
Will Dune 2 make $1 billion at the box office?
Dune: Part Two has the potential to get closer to $1 billion, but crossing it will be a difficult task for it.
At the moment of writing, Dune 2 has gone through three weekends and stands at around $494 million worldwide. Its domestic total is over $205 million while it has added $289 million from international markets. It opened with approx $82 million domestically and dropped by 44% in its second weekend ($46 million). But in its third weekend, it has only dropped 37% and brought in $29.1 million.
So, its domestic growth has been quite promising, and even though it has done far better than the first film internationally, it still hasn’t had a huge break. China and the United Kingdom play huge roles in boosting international numbers. But as per Variety, the movie has only grossed $36 million in China since its March 8 release, and $32.8 million in the U.K. since March 1.
Germany ($25 million), France ($24.9 million), and Australia ($15.6 million) have also been crucial contributors. But the movie is still trailing behind (after an 18-day-theatrical run) to reach the billion-dollar benchmark.
While it opened strong and continues to do well for itself against other films such as Kung Fu Panda 4, it still didn’t have the biggest opening compared to other billion-dollar successes. Even though it is expected to continue its domestic stronghold in the upcoming weeks, competition from Ghostbusters 4, Godzilla x Kong, and Monkey Man will diminish its overall worldwide numbers substantially.
Dune: Part Two will likely continue to play exclusively in theaters until late April or early May before getting its digital release. But still, crossing $1 billion will be a very tough ask since it still has to make more than $500 million to reach that.
