Drishyam is a gripping thriller that revolves around Vijay Salgaonkar (played by actor Ajay Devgn), a cable TV service provider in Goa. The film’s plot delves into a series of events triggered by a disturbing incident involving Vijay’s family.
In Drishyam, Vijay is a self-made businessman who had a humble beginning. He dropped out of school early in life and now operates a cable TV service. His world revolves around his family and his passion for films. Married to Nandini, he has two daughters, Anju and Anu. His life seemed ordinary until a disturbing incident unfolded.
How did Sam die?
An inappropriate video of Vijay’s elder daughter, Anju, was recorded during a nature excursion. The perpetrator, Sameer “Sam” Deshmukh, was the son of a high-ranking police official. Driven by malice, Sam attempted to exploit Anju. He threatened to expose the video. Things escalated when he appeared at her home. Nandini, Anju’s mom, intervened, pleading for mercy. In a desperate moment, Anju defended herself, unintentionally causing Sam’s demise.
Vijay swiftly devises a plan to protect his family from legal consequences. He disposed of the evidence that could implicate his daughter. Vijay was aware of Sub-inspector Laxmikant Gaitonde, who harbored hatred towards him. To deflect suspicion, he orchestrated a family outing, seeking refuge in the guise of attending a religious gathering in Panaji.
What did Vijay do to save his family?
Meera, the police official, initiated an investigation after realizing that her son was missing. She suspected Vijay and his family and summoned them for questioning. He had anticipated this development and had already coached them on altering their alibis. During interrogation, everyone corroborated their fabricated stories. Meera further probed Vijay’s interactions with local business owners during their Panaji trip. However, their testimonies validated Vijay’s alibi. But Meera suspected his manipulation.
Meera ordered Vijay and his family’s arrest. Gaitonde employed coercive tactics to extract a confession. Meanwhile, Meera unearthed crucial information about the incriminating video through Sam’s confidant, Alex. After subjecting Anu, Vijay’s younger daughter, to physical intimidation, she divulged the truth. She revealed witnessing Anju and Nandini burying Sam’s body in a compost pit.
The police excavated the pit, only to discover the rotting remains of an animal. To defend his family, Vijay protested against Gaitonde’s use of force. This incited an outrage from the crowd. Gaitonde then attempted to assault Vijay. However, this was thwarted by an enraged mob who turned on him in retaliation.
Drishyam ending: What happened to Sam’s body?
After these events, Gaitonde faces suspension. Meera resigns from her position. To seek closure, she and her husband apologize to Vijay for Sam’s actions towards his daughter. They also reveal their imminent relocation to London to live with Meera’s brother. They then request Vijay to divulge the truth behind their son’s disappearance. Vijay admits his direct involvement in Sam’s disappearance. He expresses his commitment to safeguard his family and humbly seeks Meera’s forgiveness.
At present, Vijay is summoned to the police station to sign a register. During this encounter, the police inspector asserts the persistence of their investigation and vows to uncover the truth eventually. In response, Vijay respects law enforcement and expresses confidence in their commitment to serving the community. As he exits the station, glimpses of Vijay departing from an unfinished police facility flash before, hinting at a deeper connection between him and Sam’s fate, suggesting that Sam’s remains may lie beneath the very foundation of law and order.
