Netflix has officially granted a straight-to-series order to its very first procedural medical drama, Pulse, which hails from Lost showrunner Carlton Cuse.
The series will reunite the streamer with One Day at a Time star Justina Machado, who has signed on for the leading role of Natalie Cruz. Her character is described as “a brilliant and politically-savvy doctor, who oversees both administration and medicine in her role as the Chair of Surgery and Emergency Medicine.”
What is Pulse about?
“While the staff of Miami’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Center navigate medical emergencies, young ER doc Dani Simms is unexpectedly promoted to Chief Resident amidst the fallout of her own provocative romantic relationship,” reads the official logline.
Pulse is created and executive produced by Zoe Robyn, who’s also serving as the showrunner alongside Cuse. It is executive produced by Cuse, Kate Dennis, Bradley Gardner, Emma Forman, and Michael Klick, with Dennis also tapped to direct the first two episodes.
This marks Machado’s latest major TV project since starring in last year’s dark comedy series The Horror of Dolores Roach. This won’t be the actress’ first venture into the medical drama genre as she previously made brief appearances in popular shows like ER, Grey’s Anatomy, and Private Practice. Interestingly, she also played a nurse in hit family sitcom revival of One Day at a Time, which only lasted for four seasons.
