Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is getting a spin-off at Paramount. Sam and Victor’s Day Off will follow the two valets who borrowed Cameron’s father’s Ferrari as they set out on their own adventure through Chicago. David Katzenberg will direct the spin-off, which will also take place on a single day. Jeff Sneider first reported the directorial news in his newsletter, The InSneider.
Katzenberg is best known for his work as a director and executive producer on ABC’s The Goldbergs and its shortlived spin-off, Schooled. Katzenberg produced 2017’s It and directed episodes of Young Rock, 9-1-1: Lone Star, and Average Joe. Sam and Victor’s Day Off will be Katzenberg’s feature directorial debut.
What to Expect in Sam and Victor’s Day Off?
Sneider reported the studio is in the process of hiring new writers for the spin-off, with a “theatrical release in mind.” The co-creators of Cobra Kai – Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald – will produce Sam and Victor’s Day Off with Paul Young of Argyle Media. Dina Hiller of Counterbalance will executive produce, with Stephen Cedars, Benji Kleiman, and Scott Yacyshyn serving as associate producers.
Released in 1986, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was written and directed by John Hughes. Matthew Broderick starred as Ferris, who decided to play hookey and explore the city of Chicago with his best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck) and girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara). Richard Edson and Larry “Flash” Jenkins played the two unnamed valets who used the Ferrari. The film grossed $70 million on a $5 million budget.
The film also inspired a spin-off series, 1990’s Ferris Bueller, starring Charlie Schlatter in the titular role. The series featured a young Jennifer Aniston in one of her first roles.
