Lootera Ending Explained & Spoilers: How Does Ranveer Singh’s Movie End?

Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha’s period romance, Lootera, is an underrated Bollywood movie that beautifully showcases various shades of love, heartbreak, and life.

Vikramaditya Motwane directed the movie. It is produced by Shobha Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Pictures and Anurag Kashyap and Vikas Bahl’s Phantom Films. It also stars Barun Chanda, Vikrant Massey, Arif Zakaria, Adil Hussain and Divya Dutt.

Although the movie was a commercial failure at the box office, it was critically acclaimed for Sonakshi Sinha’s and Ranveer Singh’s performances. The movie is based on author O. Henry’s 1907 short story The Last Leaf.

Lootera is set in the 1950s, against the backdrop of the Zamindari Abolition Act by the newly independent India. It revolves around a young conman posing as an archaeologist to the daughter of a Bengali zamindar. It was released theatrically on July 5, 2013.

Lootera Ending: Was Varun caught?

In the second half of Lootera, a sick Pakhi is seen living all alone in Dalhousie with her maid, Shyama. Her father had died, and she was still recovering from her heartbreak. When Inspector K. N. Singh asked her to help him catch Varun, she refused to do so, as she wanted to forget him.

Soon after, both Varun and Dev arrived in Dalhousie for their next heist. They stayed at a lodge on Pakhi’s property. However, things took a drastic turn when the police learned about their whereabouts. Varun then killed Dev and a constable to escape. But he was also shot in the encounter. He managed to remove the bullet and then sought refuge at Pakhi’s house.

Pakhi and Shyama try to hand Varun over to the police, but he threatens them. Eventually, Pakhi gives in, but she still feels enraged and starts repelling Varun’s comforting explanations. In a letter, she explains to him that she was suffering from tuberculosis and would die the day the last leaf fell from the tree outside the window. Shyama then leaves, promising Varun that he will not report him to the police.

Initially, Varun plans his escape but chooses to stay behind to look after Pakhi. He tells her his real name, Atmanand Tripathi, and confesses that he has regretted letting her go since his escape. Soon, Pakhi starts warming up to him, and her faith remains intact when each day she finds one last leaf hanging onto the tree.

At the end of Lootera, Varun decides to leave after seeing Pakhi’s improving condition. He takes off but comes face-to-face with a police blockade on the road, and they shoot him dead in an encounter.

Later, Pakhi wakes up to find Varun gone, but the last leaf is still intact on the tree. She starts growing suspicious and discovers that the leaf has been fixed to the tree by Varun. Every night, he would tie it to a branch so that she would not give up hope. She learns about it after she looks closely at the leaf and sees that it has been painted on, leaving her teary-eyed.
