Hong Kong filmmaker and action star Donnie Yen is set to headline a new film, Kung Fu, Deadline reported Wednesday. Stemming from Universal Pictures and 87North, Kung Fu is a feature adaptation of the 1970s series from ABC. David Leitch of 87North is being considered as a candidate to direct.
“Donnie Yen is both an immensely talented actor and an action film legend, and it is a privilege to have a true martial arts master leading this global film,” Leitch said in a statement. “With Donnie in place as our leading man, it will be a thrill to collaborate with him, our creative partners, and Universal in reimagining this beloved story for the big screen.”
The Kung Fu television series starred David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine, a monk and martial arts master who fled China after the death of his master. Caine traveled to America to look for his family roots, including his half-brother Danny. While traveling, Caine constantly fought assassins trying to kill him.
Yen is widely viewed as one of Hong Kong’s signature action stars. Flashpoint, Iron Monkey, and IP Man are some of his most influential martial arts and kung fu movies. American audiences will know Yen from his work in Rogue One, xXx: Return of Xander Cage, and John Wick: Chapter 4.
Who is Involved in Kung Fu?
Stephen Chin, who wrote 2016’s War Dogs, penned Kung Fu. Leitch, Kelly McCormick, and Guy Danella will produce through 87North. Stephen L’Hereaux will also produce. Ed Spielman, the creator of the Kung Fu television series, will executive produce.
