In a surprising revelation, Sheamus has opened up about the pivotal role John Cena played in his historic WWE Championship win in 2009. Sheamus, who burst onto the WWE main roster scene in June 2009, quickly made an impact on Raw. At Survivor Series 2009, he gave a standout debut performance, securing the final pinfall against John Morrison and winning the traditional five-on-five elimination tag team match.
After a dominant showing at Survivor Series, Sheamus won a “breakthrough” battle royal to become the number one contender for John Cena‘s WWE Championship at TLC.
Speaking in an interview with Virgin Media Sports Stories, Sheamus disclosed that he was initially slated to lose the match, but Cena suggested a change to the finish.
“That was a different conversation. Up until that day, I was losing that match. Things changed, Cena had a lot to do with it. Cena had a lot to do with what happened that day. It was like, ‘this is someone I can do business with. This is someone I can go around and is a believable foe,’ which is what John needed. What every good hero needs is a good villain. He saw that with me too, people did not like me. People hated me. I was so different compared to everybody in there. Long hair, short hair, super tan, tattoos. I was a different mix and he saw he could do something good with me.” he said.
Despite his short time on the main roster, Sheamus surprised fans with a clean victory over Cena in a tables match, securing the WWE title.

Leading up to the event, Cena shared concerns about his career, citing over 2000 days since his last singles victory. At Crown Jewel, Sikoa dominated, securing the win with over a dozen Samoan Strikes against Cena.
Fans might find it astonishing that John Cena’s last WWE TV win was at the 2018 Greatest Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia, where he faced off against Triple H. Following his loss at the Crown Jewel, Cena also teased retirement.
