Regina King is playing Shirley Chisholm in the first teaser trailer for Netflix’s Shirley.
Netflix released a brief teaser trailer for Shirley, a new biopic starring King as Shirley Chisholm. The footage begins to chronicle the political career of Chisholm, a politician who became the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress.

What is Shirley about?
“Shirley tells the story of the first black Congresswoman and political icon, Shirley Chisholm, and her trailblazing run for president of the U.S. It chronicles her audacious, boundary-breaking 1972 presidential campaign,” the synopsis reads.
Shirley is written and directed by John Ridley, who previously wrote 2012’s Red Tails, 2013’s 12 Years a Slave, and 2016’s Ben-Hur, while he also came up with the story for David O. Russell’s Three Kings, which was released in 1999. Ridley previously directed 1997’s Cold Around the Heart, 2013’s Jimi: All Is by My Side, 2017’s Let It Fall: Los Angeles 1982-1992, and 2021’s Needle in a Timestack.
Ridley produces the movie alongside King, Reina King, Anikah McLaren, and Elizabeth Haggard, while Jeff Skoll and Tid Gidlow serve as executive producers.
The movie also stars Lance Reddick, Lucas Hedges, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Christina Jackson, Michael Cherrie, Dorian Crossmond Missick, Amirah Vann, W. Earl Brown, Brad James, Reina King, André Holland, and Terrence Howard.
King is known for starring in movies such as 1991’s Boyz n the Hood, 1996’s Jerry Maguire, 2004’s Ray, 2018’s If Beale Street Could Talk, and 2021’s The Harder They Fall, while she also played Angela Abar/Sister Night in Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen limited series from 2019. She made her feature film directorial debut in 2020 with One Night in Miami… starring Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Goree, Aldis Hodge, and Leslie Odom Jr.
Shirley releases on Netflix on March 22, 2024.
