Following online speculation about a director’s cut of 2016’s Suicide Squad, David Ayer has announced that he’s finished with DC.
After the success of the campaign for the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, fans wondered about the potential release of Ayer’s own version of Suicide Squad. According to the filmmaker, his version was darker and more emotional than the theatrical cut and would have also seen more of Jared Leto’s Joker.
It seems that won’t be happening, though, as the director announced on Twitter that he’s done with DC. In a deleted tweet (via ComicBook) in response to a fan asking if Ayer would fight for his cut to be released, the filmmaker responded by saying, “Nope. Done and done. Very sad. You’ll be fine after a good cry. I feel healthier. It’s a wound that needs to heal.”
In another now-deleted tweet, Ayer was asked about why he’s no longer going to pursue getting his cut released, prompting him to say that “nothing about the situation looks good” and that the “studio has no interest in releasing it.

Who starred in Suicide Squad?
Based on DC Comics’ anti-hero team of the same name, Suicide Squad was written and directed by Ayer. It starred Will Smith as Deadshot, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, who became an instant fan-favorite.
Despite receiving mostly negative reviews, the film still grossed over $726 million at the worldwide box office.
