When does the Culling Game arc start in Jujutsu Kaisen?
The Culling Game arc in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga starts with chapter 159. In the story’s timeline, this arc starts on November 1, 2018.
There are two shorter arcs that will happen before the Culling Game arc begins. Right after the Shibuya Incident arc is Itadori’s Extermination arc, which includes chapters 137 to 143 of the manga. Following that is the Perfect Preparation arc, which includes chapters 144 to 158 of the manga. The Culling Game arc includes chapters 159 to 221.
Why is the Culling Game happening in Jujutsu Kaisen?
The Culling Game is part of Kenjaku’s plans. After the Shibuya Incident arc, Kenjaku’s objective was to evolve humanity through the optimization of cursed energy. The game is a dangerous battle royale type, where players are forced to kill one another using jujutsu.
In the Shibuya Incident arc, we saw Kenjaku absorb Mahito. Using Mahito’s cursed technique, Kenjaku used Idle Transfiguration to activate two kinds of marked non-sorcerers. The first type is people who consumed cursed objects, like Yuji. The second type is people who acquired cursed techniques even though their brains weren’t capable of using jujutsu, similar to Junpei.
Both types allowed them to use jujutsu. People like Yuji became strong enough to be vessels for sorcerers from previous eras. Meanwhile, people like Junpei were able to use cursed techniques as new sorcerers. In all this chaos, Kenjaku wants to have a lot of sorcerers fight each other. He thinks through this, the Heian Era will return, which he believes is the golden age of jujutsu.
The arc revolves around Yuji and the others as they participate in Kenjaku’s Culling Game. They also want to free Gojo from the Prison Realm, prevent Tsumiki Fushiguro from joining the game, and protect Tengen from Kenjaku.
