James Gunn Opens Up About Tom King’s Role in DC Universe

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has spoken briefly about what writer Tom King’s role is in the newly created DC Universe.

Taking to the Instagram social media platform Threads, Gunn opened up about King’s long-reported involvement in the DCU. According to Gunn, King is “integral” to the whole of the DCU, and not just Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the film that will be based on King’s critically acclaimed comic book series.

“Tom is an integral part of the DCU, not just [Woman of Tomorrow],” Gunn wrote. “He’s one of the first people I showed the Superman script, asking for notes. He’s included in various ways in numerous other projects, including WoT.” Gunn also confirmed that he’s considering bringing some of King’s other acclaimed comics to screens.

For some time, it’s been known that he’s been involved in DC Studios on the creative side of things, although what exactly he’s doing had been unknown until now.

Who is Tom King?

King is an author and comic book writer, who began his writing career in the late 1990s, interning for both DC and Marvel Comics. Throughout his career, he’s written a handful of critically acclaimed books, including The Visions. That run for Marvel Comics that was used partially as the inspiration behind the 2021 Disney+ series WandaVision.

For DC, King has written on comics like Heroes in Crisis (with Clay Mann), Strange Adventures (with Gerads and Evan “Doc” Shaner), Rorschach (with Jorge Fornés), and the aforementioned Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (with Bilquis Evely).

He is currently writing the publisher’s new ongoing Wonder Woman series, teaming with artist Daniel Sampere.
