Godzilla Minus One Is Highest Grossing Live-Action Japanese Movie in North America

The success of Godzilla Minus One continues to grow as the film has recently become the highest-grossing live-action Japanese film ever in North America.

The film, which is now sitting at $14.36 million at the box office (via Deadline), edges it just over the former record holder (The Adventures of Milo & Otis, which grossed $14.1 million in 1989 and 1990).

That figure could climb, however, as Godzilla Minus One continues to be shown in theaters. Following an $11 million opening weekend, Godzilla Minus One also became the largest opening for a foreign film in 2023.

What is Godzilla Minus One about?

“Post war Japan is at its lowest point when a new crisis emerges in the form of a giant monster, baptized in the horrific power of the atomic bomb,” reads the official synopsis of the film.

Godzilla Minus One is written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who previously worked on the visual effects for Shin Godzilla. It stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki. The marks the first new Toho Godzilla film since 2016’s Shin Godzilla.

Besides Godzilla Minus One, Legendary’s upcoming sequel to the Godzilla vs. Kong film film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 12, 2024. The project, titled Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, is once again directed by Adam Wingard. It is being led by Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Kaylee Hottle, and more.
