Is Yamato from One Piece trans and what pronouns does he use? Yamato is one of the significant characters in the Wano Country Arc. Due to Yamato’s desire to be Oden Kozuki, many are wondering if he’s a trans character. Here is a guide on Yamato.
Is Yamato a transgender character in One Piece?
A part of the One Piece fandom considers Yamato as trans. Although, there is no official confirmation or clarification from creator Eiichiro Oda so far regarding Yamato’s gender identity.
There are multiple aspects in the story that result in the fans considering Yamato as trans. Yamato wants to be Oden Kozuki and since Oden is male, Yamato considers himself as male. While Yamato was called “Oni Princess” as a child, this did not apply anymore when he was an adult. As an adult, Yamato refers to himself as the “son of Kaido.” Kaido and the rest of his crew also follow this. We see in the anime and manga that Kaido always calls him “son.”
In Episode 1079 of the anime (Chapter 1052 in the manga), Yamato was in the men’s section of the bathhouse when the Straw Hats and the other allies went there.
Luffy has a nickname for Yamato, which is similar to the nickname he gave Law (Tora-o). Luffy calls Yamato “Yama-o,” which in Japanese writing has the kanji for man. The official translations use “-guy” as the equivalent for this.
What are Yamato’s pronouns?
The English translations refer to Yamato with he/him/his pronouns.
In Japanese, Yamato uses the first-person pronoun “boku” which is usually masculine. Men use this pronoun, or usually young boys. However, there are a couple of female characters in other series that use masculine pronouns.
There are some discrepancies, such as Yamato’s gender being labeled as female in the Vivre Card databook. Chapter 1084 of the manga’s cover page also shows Yamato alongside Nami, Robin, and other female characters that the Straw Hats are allied with or have fought with. This can be quite confusing, especially when the story has characters like Kiku, who is confirmed to be transgender.
