Zack Snyder has revealed that he would consider returning to DC specifically to direct an adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the director of Rebel Moon spoke about whether or not he would go back to DC one day. Though the outlet noted the filmmaker “would be difficult to coax ” into returning, there’s one story he’d be interested in adapting.
Snyder said that if DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn invited him back, he’d consider adapting Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, though notes that it would have to be “a true representation of the graphic novel.”
This echoes when Snyder spoke of his enthusiasm for such a project back in 2021, where he said his adaptation would be “one hundred percent, Watchmen-style, really frame-accurate.”
When did The Dark Knights Returns first come out?
The Dark Knight Returns first released in 1986 and consisted of four issues. Written and penciled by Frank Miller, the story followed an older Bruce Wayne who returns to his role as Batman to battle crime after retiring 10 years earlier due to the death of Jason Todd — the second Robin. The story is hailed as one of the most seminal Batman stories, inspiring a wide variety of adaptations.
