Is Fargo Season 5 Based on a True Story & Real Crime Events?

With the arrival of Fargo Season 5, fans are left asking whether it is based on a true story, a book, or an original work of fiction. Here’s all you need to know about Fargo Season 5’s story inspiration.

Is Fargo Season 5 based on a true story, fiction, or a book?

No, Fargo Season 5 is not based on a true story.

Despite every episode of Fargo Season 5 and all previous seasons opening with “This is a true story,” the series is a work of fiction.

The text before each episode of Fargo states:

“This is a true story. The events depicted took place in [location] in [year]. At the request of the survivors, the names have been changed. Out of respect for the dead, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred.”

But this isn’t the case, as every season is supposed to be a dark satirical comedy on the real world. Similar to Joel and Ethan Coen’s 1996 movie of the same name, Noah Hawley’s Fargo 5 season is also not based on events from the real world. Hawley and co-writers Bob DeLaurentis, April Shih, and Thomas Bezuch worked on the script to create a fictitious crime-filled narrative.

Even though it is an anthology series, all seasons of the show take place in the same universe. So, we could even expect cameos from the past in the latest season.

The following official synopsis of Fargo Season 5 reveals what it is about:

“After an unexpected series of events lands Dorothy ‘Dot’ Lyon (Temple) in hot water with the authorities, this seemingly typical Midwestern housewife is suddenly plunged back into a life she thought she had left behind.”

The cast of the latest season is led by Mad Men’s Jon Hamm. Alongside him, we also see Juno Temple, Joe Keery, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Lamorne Morris, Richa Moorjani, David Rysdahl, Dave Foley, and Sam Spruell.
